Kia Takatū te Hapori | Get Community Ready
Community Matters
Emergencies affect everyone so we need to work together to be stronger and more resilient. Being ready as a community means we can support one another during an emergency and recover faster. It’s about building connections, planning together, and looking out for each other.
Whether you’re a part of a neighbourhood, a local club, or a cultural or faith-based group, getting prepared as a community is key to helping Auckland bounce back after an emergency.
Explore how you and your community can prepare:
-
Know your risks
Understanding these risks can help you prepare and stay safe. Explore most impactful hazards that could affect Tāmaki Makaurau / Auckland below or use the hazard viewer to see which risks could affect your home or workplace.
-
Get to know your neighbour
In an emergency, your neighbours are often your first source of help. When you know the people around you, you can look out for each other, share resources, and offer support when it’s needed most. Building these connections now can make a huge difference when emergencies happen.
Neighbourhood Support New Zealand provides supports throughout the year to help you get to know your neighbours, and provide support in times of emergency. Contact your local Neighbourhood Support Activator in Ōrākei or Howick-Botany for more.
-
Plan with your community
No one knows your community better than you and your neighbours. It’s important for everyone to come together, understand local emergency plans, and know how to respond in an emergency. Working as a team helps keep everyone safe and connected.
In an emergency, your neighbours and local groups are often the first to help. Sports clubs, faith groups, and organisations like Neighbourhood Support play an important role in caring for each other. Emergency services will be busy throughout Auckland, so communities that prepare together are better able to support themselves.
-
Connect with your local board
No one knows a community better than the people that live and work in it. Auckland has 21 Local Boards who represent communities around the region.
Local Boards ensure that local needs are considered in emergency planning and response efforts. They also play a key role in recovery, working closely with residents and supporting the community after an emergency.
We’re working with Auckland’s local boards to make sure each region has its own Emergency Response and Readiness Plan.
-
Get your school ready
Schools are not just places for learning, they are often places where the community can come together and support each other. When emergencies happen, it’s essential to have a solid plan in place.
Preparing schools for emergencies is critical for keeping our children safe and ensuring a quick recovery for our communities.
-
Volunteer to help
Auckland is a big region with a large and diverse population. In times of emergency, our staff depend on the support of volunteers to help keep communities safe during emergencies.
Volunteering during emergencies usually takes place through our Volunteer Partners or our Response Teams. Becoming a volunteer is a great way to learn new skills and give back to your community.
Auckland Response Teams are groups of trained volunteers who step up before, during, and after emergencies. Trained under the National Emergency Management Agency's standards, these teams closely collaborate with emergency services to carry out evacuations, set up safety cordons, perform flood and storm rescues, provide first aid, and support welfare needs.
